No one can accuse this doctor of not feeling her patient’s pain.

Surgeon Li Xiaopei has been filmed performing a gastroscopy on herself – so she can understand what the procedure feels like for her patients.

The operation is when a tiny plastic tube called an endoscope down the patient’s throat to take a look at their gullet, stomach and small intestine.

Dr Xiaopei inserted the camera at a hospital in Taian City, Shandong Province in eastern China, while her colleagues filmed the video.

She can be seen twisting and pushing the thin flexible tube known as she manoeuvres it down her throat.

The tube has a small light and camera at one end and links to a screen, which allows Dr Xiaopei to observe the contents of her digestive system.

The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic that numbs the throat before the tube is inserted.

Dr Xiaopei said she wanted to perform the procedure on herself in order better to understand what it felt like for her patients.

She said she hopes to be able to minimise discomfort for patients in future procedures.

She wanted to share her findings with other doctors worldwide and posted a video of the procedure on the internet.

The procedure was believed to have been performed purely for Dr Xiaopei’s research, not because she had any medical condition that made it necessary.
